Frequently Asked Questions

CTIA offers “inclusive” classes - what does this mean?

The best analogy may be that CTIA classes are for typically developing students who love the arts as well as students with disabilities who love the arts! The curriculum is driven by professional teaching artists who are experts in their fields but who first and foremost cultivate a community of acceptance and respect for all artistic contributions! The arts are for everyone!

My daughter has many years of dance training. Will she be challenged in your Modern Movement Class?

Yes. While not a traditional dance class, focused intensely on technique, any student with a love of dance/movement will find opportunities to grow and explore new ways of interacting with other dancers in a non-competitive setting, focused on story-telling and human connection.

Is this a program for adults or children?

Our program is currently designed for “middle school” through “high school” including students in transition schools up to 21 years old. This means we welcome students ages 10-21. Future programming is likely to include young adults over 21 years old.

My son does not turn 10 years old until March 2020, can he/she still enroll?

All students who submit an application to enroll in a CTIA class will be asked to meet in person (or possibly via Facetime/Skype) with an CTIA enrollment and inclusion specialist. This brief and informal discussion will offer an opportunity to assess the maturity and appropriateness of placing a student that is slightly younger than our established age range (10-21) in a class. Development is unique to each individual and our mission is to “include” as often as possible.

Do students have to know ASL to take your Percussion & Jam Class?

Absolutely not. While we anticipate having a number of students who use ASL, this class will support all students interested in exploring the common language of music and rhythm. The class will also be supported by a certified ASL interpreter, and students new to ASL are certain to enjoy learning some sign language alongside their classmates!

Will guest artists participate in classes and rehearsals?

CTIA featured artists will all rehearse together with students during tech week prior to 3/21/20. When possible, guest artists will join classes earlier in the year to meet students and to perform their songs during class to make connections and to elevate everyones’ experiences leading up to BELIEVE. When artists are not available, students will rehearse to pre-recorded tracks of artist songs (or covers) selected for BELIEVE.

Do students have to know ASL to join the Sign Language Choir and Visual Art Class?

Similar to the question above, students do not need to know ASL prior to joining this class. This class is designed for students who want to explore ASL and the power of interpreting music as a choir, in addition to connecting through visual art. Students of all abilities are welcome!
